When it comes to securing your home, sectional overhead garage doors are the safest as they are difficult to pry open from the outside. Connect your garage doors to your alarm system for extra security.
 
Werner explains that the type of mechanism or system is often related to the type of material from which the door is made. For example, roll-up mechanisms are restricted to chromadek roll-up doors while overhead sectional mechanisms can be used for most other types of doors. Overhead sectional systems are the most popular because they allow for greater drive through space and parking space in front of the door. These systems also allow less wear and tear as the weight of the door is distributed evenly over 12 wheels. Tip-up mechanisms are generally used in situations with limited headroom.

Tip! Safety
Garage doors should be installed by accredited installers. A garage door is usually the biggest moving object in a house and it can be very dangerous if not installed and tuned correctly.

Maintenance
Obviously your choice of material will determine the type of maintenance required for your garage doors. Werner offers this advice:
* Wooden doors require regular maintenance and a protective oil should be applied at approximately three-month intervals, depending on weather conditions. “We recommend that oil is used instead of varnish to avoid unnecessary sanding down of the door surface,” says Werner.
* Steel, aluminium, glass and chromadek doors are maintenance free in terms of exterior treatment .
* All garage doors should be serviced mechanically at least once a year.
